WEBSTER CITY - Andrew May is going to give his friend and teammate the benefit of the doubt. If Jonny Davis wants to insist he was making a pass rather than taking a shot, then May will just nod his head in agreement.
It was easy for both Webster City seniors to crack a joke about what was actually a woefully short shot by Davis and a great read by May in the waning moments of the Lynx season opener against Algona Bishop Garrigan Friday night in Jefferson Gymnasium. Winning has a way of lightening the mood.
With the score knotted at 41 as the clock ticked down towards triple zeroes, Davis let fly an 18-foot jumper from the top of the key that he hoped would give the Lynx a last-second comeback victory. Davis' rainbow may have hit nothing but net had it come from 17 feet, but instead it touched nothing but air.
Luckily May's instincts kicked in a fraction of a second quicker than the Golden Bears' defenders.
May raced in from the left baseline as the shot started its dissent towards the floor, plucked the ball out of the air and quickly popped it into the bucket for the game-winning field goal with just 2.1 seconds to go in Webster City's 43-41 victory.
