Taking the Plunge for East Hampton

A person not in the know certainly would have been confused by the scene.

Early Saturday morning, mingling on the beach at Lake Pocotopaug, was a stunning array of colorful characters.

Santa Claus and the Cat in the Hat were there. Pirates too. Folks were dressed in hula skirts, Bermuda shirts, turkey costumes. There was a banana roaming the shore.

Then, a little past 10 a.m., the odd crew charged into the freezing lake. And they did it for a good cause.

The second annual East Hampton Turkey Plunge, a fundraiser for the local food pantry, drew 150 participants to Sears Park and pulled in some $12,000.

“A lot of people out there need help, especially with the economy the way it is,” Alphonse Richards said of his reason for signing on for the cold bath.

Richards, decked out in full turkey get-up, took the plunge in 2010 as well. “It’s not a big deal,” he said. “You run, get in, get out and dry off.
