A principal of many hats
You might find Shawanoe Elementary School principal Alejandro Schlagel carrying a megaphone and wearing flippers, walking around and shouting words of encouragement to second-graders taking swim lessons after school.
Now he’s in the pool, swimming against former Olympic gold medalist Scott Goldblatt while squeals smack off the walls of the nearby high school’s natatorium. Look again and Schlagel will be wearing a sombrero and smocks covered in penguins and snowmen as he helps dish up lunch (“queeeso y chips”). Blink, and you’ll miss him pedaling a bicycle down the hallway alongside a student.
He’s foremost a principal, but Schlagel wears many hats. Some hats signal it’s time to work, others indicate what’s for lunch. From 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the week, he’s at once a cheerleader, a coach and, most of all, a man trying to figure out how to increase parental involvement and improve his school’s standing.

Schlagel, 38, is in his first year as principal at Shawanoe, a school that celebrated its 50th birthday last spring, months after it fought to keep its doors open while the Shawnee Mission school district decided which schools it would close.
