A look back at the Sporting Year of 2011

It was the year the County hurlers and footballers were free yet again to attend the Galway Races unencumbered by any inter-county championship distractions. We were for a time without a hurling manager, a football manager and a camogie manager!

And not a hope of an All Star but fair play to the Camogiers Susan Earner, Therese Maher, Ann Marie Hynes, Lorraine Ryan, Niamh Kilkenny and Brenda Hanney, they were honoured.

We lost GAA enthusiasts Florrie McCarthy Kilbeacanty, Patrick Egan Tuloughmore, Cathal Nolan Corofin, Michael Cunningham Ardrahan and Barry Shiel Tommy Larkins.

We lost Ronnie Ball, Fr Nicholas Murray, Mary Costello, Jimmy O’Sullivan and Tom Tuohy. We lost rugby greats Hubie O’Connor, Cormac Greally, Maurice Griffin, Sean Healy, Noel Carpenter and a fine rugby brain in Sean Conneely.

It was the year Siobhán McCrohan in her scull won a world bronze medal in Lucerne, the year of Mattie Murphy yet again, the year Conor Niland, with the big Galway connections, gave us four hours in the sun at Wimbledon on the longest day of the year, now Roger Federer might never know, the year David Forde won his first international soccer cap. Butterfly specialist David O’Sullivan competed in the European Youth Olympics in Turkey.
