Looking back: A little IU football, a little IU basketball
Let’s start with football. After IU’s 55-3 loss on the road at Michigan State, the first season under football Kevin Wilson has been reduced to one game. Depending on how you look at it, Indiana will either play with a nothing-to-lose, season-spoiler mentality against a Purdue team that needs to win to get bowl eligible, or the Hoosiers will just mail this one in.
To be honest, I felt like IU had made a few small strides up until the Michigan State game. With Tre Roberson starting, IU had averaged 27 points per game in the three games. But Saturday’s game was over early and could have been much worse if coach Mark Dantonio had opted to leave his seniors in beyond the end of the third quarter.
What will IU do against Purdue? If I was to guess, I would think the Hoosiers will play a lot closer to the way they had been playing before Michigan State and will try to send the senior’s out not only with a spoiler type victory, but with back-to-back Bucket games victories for the first time since the 1993 and 1994 seasons. Now, can they pull it off? Maybe, but I’m thinking the odds are probably better that IU finishes its season 1-11. It continues to be about the defense or the lack of a defense and there’s just nothing to hang your hat on to think that IU can pull off a victory. We’ll see.
