Pedaling across Ireland without maps, partners or plans
Some time last summer, I decided that I needed to do something physically demanding to make me feel good. I don’t really know why these needs arise, but they generally occur at two or three year intervals.
The last one happened about four years ago, around the time my father died. I flew to San Francisco with my bicycle and pedaled it to the Mexican border. I’m pretty sure that the ride cleared my head and helped me handle the passing of my dad better than I would have without it. It might have something to do with physical exhaustion and the release of endorphins.
Anyway, it was that time again.
The first thing I had to do was decide where to go and when.
The idea of pedaling through Ireland seemed to fit the bill perfectly. I had gone to Belfast, Northern Ireland, last year to watch the Boston Bruins beat a top European hockey team, and I thought that a bicycle ride from Belfast to Cork in the south would be a good accomplishment.
As I started to research the ride on the internet, I found that there was already a well-known, harder bicycle challenge, that people in Ireland did for charity.
