Reporter and PSU alum tries to make sense of the Penn State situation
It's not supposed to be this way.
I always thought it was supposed to come after winning a big bowl game, or his final game at Beaver Stadium, or at the start of the year when he realizes "It's time."
There were always going to be tears, but also pride, sadness, honor and respect for a living legend.
Instead, Joe Paterno - legendary coach and the symbol of the Pennsylvania State University - was fired Wednesday under a cloud of suspicion, uncertainty and controversy.
There are still tears, but now shame. Students, alumni and fans are upset, but also angry, disgusted and ultimately left wondering what happened.
Personally, it all comes down to one simple question: What did Paterno know?
Did Mike McQueary tell him exactly what he saw? Did Paterno know how graphic and disgusting the crime was? If he did, will everything Paterno stood for - his reputation and ultimately his legacy - be tarnished forever?
As an alum who has proudly supported and bragged about everything Penn State and Paterno since high school, all I feel is confusion.
