That's the approach Dean Labadie takes. And in October, he celebrated the Strelitzia Flower Company's 40th anniversary.
In that time he's learned that as a luxury item, flower sales are among the first to shrink and first to bloom, he said.
"They're the first thing to go," Labadie said.
Despite that, he's outlasted four decades of continuous competition in both Woodland and Davis. The secret, he said, is to offer a fresh, quality product -- even though these days it means weekly trips to Santa Cruz in search of better prices and better flowers.
Long trips are a tradition for Labadie, something that dates back to his first sales in October 1971, when he positioned himself to capitalize on the still-strong spirit of the 60s.
