Five days ago, five young girls in a Polynesian dance class lost
their assistant instructor, Vena Mapu Finau, in a car crash. Their
instructor, Vena’s daughter Nar Nar Finau, was released Thursday
from the hospital.
Surrounded by hundreds of parents and grandparents, the girls,
ages 5 to 9, decided to dance in the semiannual Legacy Dance Show
at the Lehi Legacy Center on Thursday in spite of the tragedy.
"They were such wonderful people and dedicated their time to the
community by teaching Polyneisan Dance here at the Legacy Center
,and I'm just so glad the girls wanted to still dance and dedicate
the dance to Nar Nar and her mom," said Abby Havea, program
director. Havea's daughter, 9-year-old Malia Havea, was in the
class.
"We dedicated the dance because we wanted to give it to her,"
Malia said.
Halle Wood, age 7, said they dance because it's fun and because
they can.
Another Polynesian dance student, 9-year-old Amanda Lewis, said
they had been practicing for two months. She acted as substitute
leader for their show.
