THE benefits of stretching and yoga are many: a lithe physique, less injury, fitness and relaxation. Another treat is a good massage. But what if you could combine all three?
That's the aim of yoga massage, a treatment that's part stretch class, part yoga asana (position) routine, and part massage. Sounds like a winning treble to me.
In yoga massage, a therapist guides you through a series of challenging postures that ease your aches and provide plenty of dynamic movement, helping you achieve postures beyond your usual ability.
Then comes the massage, but don't be fooled by this word -- there's not much time to lie around and relax during the treatment as you do most of the work. But with a little help and some deep breathing, you'll find yourself doing a range of tough moves.
For example, there's a killer IT (illotibial) stretch, where you have one leg across the other and are touching the ground up near your head.
Sound like a contortionist? Don't worry, you take it a bit at a time and if I can do it, so can anyone reasonably active.
