Bowlers thrive as green wickets generate returns
Canterbury's club cricketers experienced conditions akin to the second New Zealand-Australia test in Hobart on Saturday with juicy green wickets producing some spectacular returns in the opening round of the two-day championship.
Rain midweek and a lack of sun made for some fiery surfaces but bowlers were not all-conquering with two batsmen scoring tons.
Among the highlights were:
Riccarton pace bowler Hayden Shaw capturing 10 wickets in a day with two bags of five wickets and proving almost unplayable as Lancaster Park-Woolston were on their knees at 22 for six in their second innings on Hagley 3 after being rolled for 94 first time.
A hat-trick to LPW pace bowler Ben Cant in the same match with Shaw one of the victims along with Brad Gordon and Andrew Leckie on the way to Cant capturing five for 32 as Riccarton scratched out a 25-run first innings lead. Cant completed a fine double, top-scoring with 48 more than half LPW's first innings tally.
Marist-Harewood were routed for 88 in bowler-friendly conditions at Elmwood Park against Old Boys-Collegians as the seamers ran riot.
