The need for white lies became ice-crystal clear as I staggered into the wintry waters of Lake Ontario Jan. 1.
The bone-chilling New Year’s Day tradition is about survival by self-deception. A dip into 2C water isn’t frigid. It’s “refreshing” or “invigorating.”
Bill Themeles preferred the word “cleansing.”
“I tell first-timers it’s a cleansing experience, like losing a layer of old skin,” the 47-year-old Ancaster resident explained in the minutes before the plunge. He paused. “They don’t believe me, but it’s true.”
Turns out the veteran dipper actually did lose some skin to the polar plunge a few years back, courtesy of a nasty buildup of nearly invisible ice crystals in the water. “Hundreds of tiny cuts!” he said with an enthusiastic grin.
I look around Van Wagner’s Beach, where close to 100 determined dippers mill about in anticipation. The happiest appeared to be in costume. Themeles has gone with the William Wallace look, complete with a kilt and metre-long plastic Braveheart sword.
