The winter chill is under way in Napa; it’s time to scour the closets for seldom-used coats and other clothes that could help keep someone else warm.
Beginning this week, Unity Church is placing collection bins at sites throughout Napa to gather winter clothing, particularly for men — for whom there is typically a greater need, according to coat drive coordinator Tom Lopez. This will be the sixth year the church has collected men’s coats, in addition to other items, to benefit to the Napa Valley Shelter Project.
Organizers hope to collect 2,400 coats, twice the number collected last year.
“The more, the merrier,” Lopez said.
The coat drive is aimed at collecting items for men, but items for women and children are also accepted, he said.
“The men are often forgotten,” Lopez said, noting the need for men’s clothing could be because fewer men donate their clothes.
Rodney Seib, a volunteer coordinator for Community Action of Napa Valley, said there are more homeless men in Napa than women and children, therefore the need for lightly used, warm men’s clothing is great. The Hope Resource Center in downtown Napa has a room where it keeps donated coats and clothing for their clients to take. Right now, there are “tons of coats” but a need for other items.

Minnesota memories: Risking my life in Duluth's Bowery I also noticed that all the men wore stocking or regular hats and Eddie told me the hats were just as important for keeping you warm as the newspaper. In fact, he said “if your feet are cold and you want to warm 'em up, just keep your hat on. ... |
