Eve festivities start early
Hadley Keith wanted to see what the ice carver was doing during the Noon Year's Eve festival Saturday at the Toledo Zoo, and a perch atop her very tall father's shoulders was a perfect spot from which to get a better look.
"It's cool," the 5-year-old from Mason, Mich., said. "He's making stars."
"We love coming here. It's awesome," said mom Stephanie Keith, who had taken Hadley to the zoo event a year earlier and on Saturday brought husband, Michael, and older daughter, Rachel, 15, along to wrap up 2011. The family was making a day of it, with plans to stick around for the Lights Before Christmas display and some hot cocoa.
"My wife's trying to make this a family tradition," Mr. Keith said. The family already makes the nearly two-hour trek from Mason, near Lansing, several times a year to visit the zoo, he said.
The Keiths were among scores of people who gathered to watch Chad Hartson of Napoleon-based Ice Creations practice his craft shortly after the midday raising of the "Noon Year's" ball in the zoo's central plaza.
