Some men mess around with drill bits in their garden sheds. Romek Delimata is a touch more ambitious. He built a fully-functioning cockpit of an Aer Lingus jumbo jet.

When he lived in Inchicore in Dublin, Romek was able to walk down to the end of his garden, step inside his shed, and take off to the far flung corners of the earth .

Or that was how it seemed.

Romek rebuilt a flight simulator that replicates the cockpit of a 747, with all the brightly lit buttons, knobs and control. And his machine also recreates, in 3D, thousands of flight paths, airports and runways across the world.

Until recently it was just an elaborate hobby -- the most super-DIY gadget that you would ever hope to see.

When he is back on earth, Romek is an art director for movies. He has worked on a Batman film, Braveheart and Behind Enemy Lines.

Having reconstructed the jumbo's cockpit in his spare time, the aviation enthusiast has now opened his simulator to the public in an old tramyard in Dalkey.
