Snap happy

I wouldn’t expect to be take photos of other people’s children at a day care centre or in the change room of a public pool but honestly the restriction on taking photos is becoming a bit over the top. A cafe I was in last week had signs up (which I ignored) saying that the taking of photographs inside or outside the premises was prohibited. Why? Smart businesses are actually harnessing the real marketing power of good customer experiences by encouraging people to check in, post photos of their food etc. Provided photos are being taken in a way that doesn’t interfere with the dining experience of others or identify others not in your group why on earth would you ban it?

Bald Barbie

A campaign to encourage Mattel to make a bald Barbie is gaining momentum and yesterday had 122,839 followers on Facebook. Organisers say they “ would like to see a Beautiful and Bald Barbie made to help young girls who suffer from hair loss due to cancer treatments, Alopecia or Trichotillomania . Also, for young girls who are having trouble coping with their mother's hair loss from chemo. Many children have some difficulty accepting their mother, sister, aunt, grandparent or friend going from a long haired to a bald. We think accessories such as wigs, bandanas, scarves and hats could be included. This would be a great coping mechanism for young girls dealing with hair loss themselves or a loved one. We would love to see a portion of proceeds go to childhood cancer research and treatment. Let's get Mattel's attention!

At the football a couple of weeks ago, it started raining heavily and of course umbrellas are banned in most sports venues these days. The guy selling plastic ponchos with a life expectancy of about five minutes did a roaring trade, at five dollars each. But the lady sitting next to me had come prepared – she had a red nylon raincoat and she took a fold-up plastic rain bonnet out of the pocket and slipped it on. She was about 40 and quite attractive and the bonnet actually looked OK on her. She said she had picked up the coat and plastic hat for a total price of $ 1 at a charity shop five years ago and this was the only place she wore them, and they always kept her perfectly dry. And at least she didn’t look like she belonged to the Ku Klutz Klan.

Those rainhats don’t look anywhere near as bad as people make out and they have to be better than some of the alternatives. What do others think?

They remind me of shower caps. Why don’t people just wear those instead? They’d be multipurpose so you save cash and such, and you kind of look smart wearing them. Or at least like you’ve just stepped out of an operating room....
