International-caliber paddling competitions will resume on the Muskegon River in 2013 when the National Canoe and Kayak Championships return to Newaygo, event organizers announced this week.

A bid to bring the event back to Newaygo was accepted last week by the United States Canoe Association at is annual meeting in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

“We are really excited and delighted,” said Scott Faulkner, chairman for the Newaygo Chamber of Commerce. “Having it here is like having another holiday weekend.”

The 2011 Newaygo Nationals, as they are referred to locally, drew 430 canoe, kayak and paddle board racers from around the world. The competitors arrived from 26 states, five Canadian provinces, Belgium and New Zealand. The event also brought 3,000 to 4,000 tourists to the city, according to Faulkner.

Gabe Slominski, chairman of the 2011 Newaygo Nationals, said the 2013 event will be structured much like the last, with sprints on Croton Pond and a marathon event that begins on the pond but continues down river to Newaygo.

Last night in my attempt to cook more at home and prepare the week, I made what I thought was a tray of steel cut oats.  It's a very simple, very delicious recipe that I found one day online (see the bottom of this post).  I was looking forward to eating this every morning covered in honey or cinnamon and agave for the next few days.  When I took it out of the oven I was a little perplexed, it looked different.  I tasted it, it tasted different, but not too different, but the texture was funny.  After some thought I think (still not 100% sure) I cooked a big tray of couscous.  I'm not sure what to do with this giant tray (I doubled the recipe) of couscous cooked in milk and water.
