At Your Library: Winter

Winter is one of my favorite seasons, along with fall, spring, and summer! When I say I like winter, I'm not just trying to be different or ornery. I love the cold weather, the snow, and snuggling into bed with lots of blankets and comforters. I also like wearing turtlenecks and sweaters, boots and mittens, scarves and hats. I love fires in the fireplace, the Christmas season, the way snow outlines the branches of trees in the forest, the silence of snow fall, and tromping around outdoors in my snowshoes.

I recognize the downside of winter: shoveling, paying to heat the house, driving in bad weather and scraping ice off the windshield. But the upside of a good snowstorm is staying put, forcing us to put our errands on hold, adding a log to the fire and making a cup of hot chocolate.

New Englanders love to complain about the cold, but I think we secretly feel superior to those who live in more southern climes. It may be we think of ourselves as built of tougher stuff, able to survive colder temperatures — a pride that may be undeserved, but nonetheless is there. I lived in Texas for four years and while there I missed the changes in seasons. The springs weren't as fresh, the falls not as colorful, the summers were too hot, and the winters were just damp and dreary. I feel fortunate to live in this area.
