Losing weight is a popular New Year’s resolution, and pursuing that goal doesn’t have to mean running on a treadmill every day.

Whether you want to change your workout routine, can’t commit to a monthly gym fee or you’d rather head outdoors, there are plenty of options around the county to keep you moving.

With the Linville Gorge nearby, easy to moderate hikes are good ways to get your aerobic exercise outside of the gym, said Mike Fischesser, founder of The American Adventure Service Corps.

“Burke County has an amazing amount of natural resources that are relatively unknown by most people in the southeastern United States,” Fischesser said. “You could spend years here exploring things in Burke County.”

The Linville Gorge was one of four areas east of the Rocky Mountains designated as a wilderness area by the 1964 Wilderness Act.

Paddling can be anything from canoeing on a calm lake to doing pirouettes in a play boat in class III rapids. It can mean floating on a sit-on-top on a warm Florida bay or navigating a touring kayak in frigid Alaska waters. Although sometimes believed to occur only in sub-freezing conditions, it can actually develop in a wide range of temperatures. It can be a significant threat if exposure to wind, rain or cold water is prolonged. Be aware of the water temperature and dress for it, especially if you face the risk of capsizing.
