There's not even a hint of irreverence when Lee Sigley asks the local community constable if he can keep a pig out the back of the police station.

Sigley is wandering around the gnarled fruit trees and new beds of potatoes, tomatoes and miner's lettuce that make up the Te Atatu community garden, planted in the backyard of the police station on the Te Atatu peninsula, when the idea of raising swine crops up.

"Don't think a pig would last here long," is Constable Faga Siaki's answer.

It's turned out to be a smart idea, having a community garden on police property. Very little broccoli is pilfered and young offenders can do a couple of hours of their community service weeding and digging the trench to keep the bamboo at bay.

"We've had people take veges overnight, but it means someone out there is eating veges - and that's a good thing," Sigley says. "Over summer people sneak in to pick the strawberries and passionfruit and we're happy someone is enjoying them.

If you go to your local Walmart, there is a section, next to the scented decorative candles that has a bunch of cds for sale for calming or meditatiing and you can try them first to see if the sounds on them are soothing or irritating. Be careful on which one you select. we had one that was fabulous to sooth you to sleep, It was called Rain forrest and it had far away thunder and the patter of rain, very soothing. Unfortunately the idiot that recorded it added a freaking jungle bird shreiking at just about the time you would be lulled to sleep. I busted the cd after the second night.

Gore-tex parka with underarm ventilating zippers, Gore-tex pants and a wide-brimmed hat. Wear polyester or polypropolene or light merino wool layers underneath to transfer the sweat and condensation that are inevitable. For colder rain I will also wear thick wool pants and/or jacket, like Woolrich or Pendleton hunting clothing, instead of Gore-tex. Even soaked through, wool stays warm and breathes better than the nylon shells. For my head I prefer a Filson packer waxed cotton hat (see link below): I'm a little concerned about using Neos though. I have a pair and they are great for soft snow and walking in rain on city streets, but I would hesitate to use them for a back country hike due to the poor traction on rock and muddy slopes. For wet hikes I use sturdy leather hiking boots well treated with SnoSeal wax and with waterproof nylon or Gore-tex knee-high gaiters over the tops. I'd rather have Vibram soles against a rough trail than those flimsy Neos soles. Always either merino wool or fluffy polyester socks.
