Driving in winter: Use your head and wear a hat

Winter is here, or at least it was. It blew in a week or so ago, stuck its head in the door and disappeared again, like a college student coming home for spring break.

It’ll almost certainly return, though. At the risk of sounding like an extremely old person who sits in a rocking chair and waves her cane around while recalling yesteryear, I must note that weather much like this — lots of rain, unseasonably high temperatures — preceded the blizzard of ’78, which roared into Ohio early on a Thursday morning, waking everybody up and shutting things like heat and electricity down.

Not that I’m predicting another blizzard. I seriously believe that we won’t see the likes of that again. To offer some perspective, in 1978 my mother-in-law said she got out of bed when the wind began howling around the house and the windows frosted over. “I’ve never seen a storm like this in my life,” she told my husband and me. Watching the weather was like turning a house cat turn into a mountain lion.

Last night in my attempt to cook more at home and prepare the week, I made what I thought was a tray of steel cut oats.  It's a very simple, very delicious recipe that I found one day online (see the bottom of this post).  I was looking forward to eating this every morning covered in honey or cinnamon and agave for the next few days.  When I took it out of the oven I was a little perplexed, it looked different.  I tasted it, it tasted different, but not too different, but the texture was funny.  After some thought I think (still not 100% sure) I cooked a big tray of couscous.  I'm not sure what to do with this giant tray (I doubled the recipe) of couscous cooked in milk and water.

First of all, this hat was purchased for my husband. He has trouble finding a hat that fits because he has a large head and the adjustability of this hat makes it perfect. It's terrific in the rain because it's wide brim will not allow any water to get into the collar of his jacket. He uses it specifically to play golf in inclement weather. He would definitely recommend this hat to anyone.
