MERIDEN - A sunny and cold, but snowless, day greeted runners and walkers Sunday morning at Hubbard Park.

Hundreds gathered to participate in the 43rd annual Bernie Jurale Memorial Tradition Run. Participants registered at the park's maintenance facility, where they enjoyed orange juice and snacks before their uphill, 3.1-mile trek.

Jurale, a former chemistry teacher at Platt High School, ran the 3.1 miles to Castle Craig in 1970 to celebrate his 70th birthday. Since then, the event has become a tradition. Participants brave January weather, admit they're a little crazy and take on the noncompetitive course. No fees or prizes are awarded, just a certificate.

Donning hats, gloves and earmuffs, men and women were in good spirits as they stretched and stayed warm.

"This is great running weather," said Meriden resident Robert Najarian. "This is like Florida."

In past years, the route has been splotched with spots of black ice or inches of snow, making it difficult to navigate, he said.
