The snow let up Thursday afternoon in time for a funeral at Calvary Cemetery on West University Drive in Flagstaff. Three men in brilliant red-and-gold jackets, white aviator shirts with no ties, and dress blue pants with red stripes gathered near the grave.
Official patches with gold eagle, globe and anchor marked them as Marines, as they gathered with veterans from other military groups.
All had come early, before the family and the casket arrived from the church.
The men were members of the Marine Corps League Color Guard, San Francisco Peaks Detachment 912, who were preparing for the ceremony that would honor a fallen soldier. Paul A. Nigro, 83, an Army veteran of World War II, would be buried in the veterans section of the Catholic cemetery.
THEY COME WHEN CALLED
The unit's sergeant at arms, Guadalupe (Lupe) Velasco Jr., had gone to the local American Legion Post 3 downtown to get five M1 Garand rifles out of the Color Guard safe there for the rifle salute at the graveside.
