Tom Chambers, the winner of BBC TV’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2008, will be visiting the Bristol Hippodrome this March when, along with actress Summer Strallen, he stars in the brand new stage adaptation of the classic Irving Berlin film Top Hat .
After a 17-week UK tour, and 77 years after its movie release, the Bristol Hippodrome is to be Top Hat’s final calling point before it transfers to the Aldwych Theatre for its West End premiere.
Tom Chambers is well known to television viewers for his appearances in Waterloo Road and Holby City; he won legions of new fans in 2008 when he voted the winner of Strictly Come Dancing with his professional partner Camilla Dallerup. Tom will be taking on a role made famous by the legendary dancer Fred Astaire when he plays famous American tap dancer Jerry Travers in Top Hat.
Jerry Travers meets the girl of his dreams when he arrives in London to appear in his first West End show and he follows her across Europe in a bid to win her heart. In the movie the role of Dale Tremont was played by Ginger Rodgers, stepping into her shoes on the Hippodrome stage will be Summer Strallen who was nominated for Best Performance for a Supporting Role for her portrayal of Meg Giry in Love Never Dies at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. Summer has appeared in many West End productions and also has film and television credits including Hotel Babylon, Beyond the Sea and Hollyoaks.

The film starts off with beautiful flowers and gorgeous gowns. All the ladies are dressed perfectly, with piled up hair and rosy cheeks. The rich and the poor are contrasted very dramatically in this film. I find that in this scene, and often in the rest of the film, they use a lot of straight lines on set when they show the upper class, possibly to give off a neat, formal feeling, a feeling of order. After the rain scene which gets all the upper class people in a flurry, we get our first glimpse of Eliza Doolittle, in her black straw hat, dark green overcoat and yellowed apron. It's a big contrast to the pastel gowned, neat, clean, beautifully dressed ladies in the first scene. She is more free in her manner, running around, slouching onto columns, messy hair and dirty face. Here is Eliza, with her funny attempt to dress up.
