Field trip set at timber planning area
SWEET HOME — The Sweet Home Ranger District will hold a public field trip to the Toll Joe timber planning area on Monday, Jan. 30.
This is the second field trip being offered to gather public input and engage interested parties in discussions about the various techniques that can be used to manage forest stands to enhance wildlife habitat and reduce hazardous fuels.
The Toll Joe planning area is in the eastern portion of the South Santiam Watershed, 20 miles east of Sweet Home. It consists of approximately 22,000 acres, 70 percent of which are old growth that provide habitat for a variety of plant and animal species. The stands are dominated by Douglas fir, western hemlock and western red cedar.
The district is proposing to use a combination of vegetation management techniques including various intensities of thinning, creating small openings, and promoting areas for snags and down wood to create variation within the forest stands, which benefit wildlife. The proposal also includes leaving some areas unthinned.
