What is the flap at the back of a hat such as French Legionnaires wear in the desert called?

Question: It is obviously intended to provide sun protection for the back of the neck


Answer: I don't know what the term would be in French, but in the mid 19th century (American Civil Warand before) a similar covering was called a havelock. It didn't turn out to be very popular, but I do see people with them occassionally today. Good question!!
