Gilles-Sweet students warm up to the idea of a mitten tree: A Place in the Sun

During the holiday season, many of us make an extra effort to help the less fortunate. Many churches, schools and organizations sponsor food drives, collect clothing and money or purchase Christmas gifts for the needy.

Students at Gilles-Sweet Elementary School in Fairview Park are starting to be socially aware at a very young age by continuing a tradition at their school: the mitten tree. The tradition was carried over to Gilles-Sweet from the former Garnett Elementary School.

“Since children tend to be more excited about giving vs. receiving, it is very heartwarming to watch the children as they enthusiastically look for the perfect spot to place their hat, mitten or scarf on the tree,” said Cathi Patton , a Gilles-Sweet PTA member.

Patton, along with the Gilles-Sweet Student Council, helped organize the mitten tree this year. Donations will be given to the children of local families in need, Laura’s Home (located in Cleveland’s West Park neighborhood), Fairview Park Junior Women’s League adopted families and the Fairview Park Senior Center.
