From sunrise to sunset, Tucsonans joined together Saturday to remember Tucson's dark day one year ago, and to celebrate life beyond the tragedy that shook our city and the nation.
The Beyond effort, intended to embrace community, spurred nearly 40 events, from yoga to solemn vigils to social runs.
Here is how Tucson remembered.
6:30 a.m.
It's dark. 44 degrees. And Karen Falkenstrom sits in the middle of a labyrinth outside the Tucson Medical Center hospice, softly pounding a drum, like a somber heartbeat.
Sage is burned. Others filter over, armed with mittens and hats and thermoses of coffee, to take a seat on one of the white plastic lawn chairs encircling the area.
Susan Willis, a 48-year-old business executive, is among the first to arrive, bundled in a scarf. Willis, who remembers she was taking her son to karate practice when she heard the news last year, was struck by how many connections brought her to this place. She's friends with Ross Zimmerman, who lost his son, Gabe, in the shooting. She works at University of Arizona Medical Center, which was right at the center of last year's heartbreak and healing.
