Millions needs to rekindle the magic

The program evolved around the centrepiece two-year-old race, so much so that a maiden race on the program now has a stake of $82,000.

The honour roll for the $1.6 million two-year-old race has belied its restricted sales-only status. Snippets, a champion, won the first MM in 1987, followed by topliners Bold Promise, Clan O'Sullivan, Brave Warrior, General Nediym, Testa Rossa, Assertive Lad, Dance Hero and Phelan Ready.

But the Millions isn't what it used to be. This year's runners, mainly Queensland-trained youngsters, are anonymous to most of us.

There has been a shift in thinking, and programming, that now makes it difficult to factor-in the Millions, especially for youngsters trained in Melbourne.

There wasn't a Victorian-trained horse in either the two- or three-year-old Millions last year and there are only two Victorians in the two-year-old at Saturday's 25th Millions meeting Alezan Thunder (Mark Kavanagh) and Mrs Grey (David Hayes) and only three Victorians on the nine-race program.
