The last time I planned a summer holiday wardrobe for a coastal getaway it rained the entire time and I was forced to pop into an Urban or the like and buy a fleece track-top.
The silver sandals, boob-tube dresses and oversized sunnies remained in my suitcase. I took solace in the fact that scouring the malls to track down just the right pieces for my beach sojourn were part of the pleasure and that holiday-wear can be worn any time of the year – even when you go about your ordinary existence in a landlocked city.
A holiday item can inject a carefree energy into whatever you do. It is for this reason designer Thula Sindi recently observed that his summer resort collections are more often seen on the streets of Joburg than the Cape coastline.
After a long period of austere minimalist fashion, this summer’s fashion has seen the first burst of colour, breaking that mundane beige vortex that fashionistas have been sucked into for the last few seasons. Starved of colours for the last couple of years, designers seem to have gone a bit bonkers for anything bright, ushering in the so-called colour block trend, which if you haven’t opened a fashion magazine in months involves blocks of contrasting colours juxtaposed against each other.
