Yes, it would be fine to have several weeks of slow, soaking rain, but our meteorologists keep saying this winter will be warmer and drier than normal, so we might as well get used to it, get outdoors, and have some fun.

Which is what I did several Saturdays ago on a day so close to perfect that it might have been a dream, except even my dreams aren’t that good: sunny, calm, and cold in the morning with the promise of afternoon warmth. Off to Palo Duro Canyon I went.

I started hiking the canyon in the 1960s, which doesn’t make me an expert, but does mean I’ve logged hundreds of miles both off and on the official trails, mostly off, propelled by nothing but these two size 14 old dogs. After seeing most of what there is to see on the established trails, long ago I headed for the hills, where the really marvelous things are.

You’ll want to be careful if you hike off the marked trails. In January, I don’t worry about snakes, but in other seasons you’re wise to mind your step. I once strode right over some brush containing a good-size rattler without seeing it. Apparently I woke it up, though, because it buzzed like a house-afire for the guy behind me, who reacted with more drama than I thought possible.
