AUSTRALIA (CNN) -- An Australian doctor has called for an American icon to be banned from that country's beaches. He says baseball caps contribute to skin cancer by not shading enough skin.

Midday, when the sun is at its most brutal there's plenty of skin on show at Surfers Paradise but not a hat to be seen. Most people say full brimmed hats aren't attractive. They'd probably change their minds if they met Don Jamieson. A lifetime spent outdoors has left him riddled with skin cancers.

He used to wear a cap; it didn't help. He's had more than forty operations and counting. He says, "You'd walk into a shopping centre and you'd hear kids say look at that poor man".

One plastic surgeon has seen too many patients like Don and says extreme measures are needed. Surgeon Ian McDougall says, "Hats such as baseball caps, the baggy greens, certainly the lifesaver caps, they should all be banned."

He says the slip, slop slap message has failed. McDougall says, "Patients come in and they say if only I knew.. I'm afraid they did know but they didn't know well enough".
