Old man winter brings the perfect snowy, icy conditions for outdoor fun, but also sets the scene for thousands of injuries that result from such cold temperature activities as sledding, skiing, snowboarding, and skating every year.

Many injuries to children can be prevented if parents take a few simple precautions.

“It begins with providing the proper clothing, safety gear and sun screen and by ensuring their child stays hydrated,” said Amy Teddy, coordinator for the Safe Kids Huron Valley Coalition. “In addition, providing children a snowboarding or skiing lesson before they head to the slopes will provide them with the necessary skills to not only reduce their frustrations but also their risk of injury. Finally, parents need to have their children come inside periodically to warm up and prevent hypothermia or frostbite.”

Approximately two out of five traumatic brain injuries among children are associated with participation in sports and recreational activities. Studies indicate that wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of impact forces to the brain. Safe Kids Huron Valley recommends children always wear helmets when sledding, skiing, snowboarding, or playing ice hockey.

COMMENTS from readers about last week’s ‘hot helmets’ story, part of the ongoing debate about quad-bike safety, are demonstrating how polarised those with a view on the issue are.

A raft of ‘postings’ on the Farmonline web site ranged from expressing belief in the need for quad-bike users to wear head protection gear, to “nanny state” claims should the Queensland Government, even the Commonwealth, mandate the use of helmets.

Sadly, reports from Tasmania are of a bedside vigil for a young British woman who reportedly is on life support following an accident with a quad-bike when working on a dairy farm late last week.

Safety authorities remain hopeful that 2012 won’t see a repeat of the 23 farm-related deaths involving quad-bikes as the year unfolds.

A Farmonline submission by “Qlander” notes that “a pushbike-type skullcap with a brim and ventilation is what's needed” to safeguard quad-bike users.
