Do you remember the sour apple martini? Tasted like a liquefied Jolly Rancher candy, had the color of the Green Hornet’s rubber breastplate, looked phosphorescent in a certain kind of dim bar lighting?
We’re talking 2002, and it was the breakout star of the age of Popsicle-hued vodka drinks. I think I loved one once, seduced by its cachet and easy candy come on. The sour apple martini was but one stop in my quest to find a clear spirit with my name on it. But try as I might, I never liked the sugary pop of vodka drinks or the brine of dirty martinis.
Friends tried to introduce me to the pleasures of a proper classic martini, made with quality gin, plump olives and the rumor of vermouth. I found these drinks stinging and unpalatable until I was halfway through them and the alcohol made taste perception moot. My cocktail geek friends would go on about the botanicals in the gin; I felt like it was always a stiletto boring a hole into my head.
Late in life I realized the obvious. I’m a Manhattan drinker. Just as I’d rather sip on a warming glass of whiskey than an icy shot of vodka, I prefer cocktails made with brown liquor.
