Black Kats blank Blues 3-0
The game marked the Western Conference season opener for both AAA boys hockey teams. The Black Kats are three-time reigning provincial champions while the Blues are welcoming a new coaching staff to the bench.
Will McGivney also scored for FHS. Rookie goaltender Ryan Foley earned the shutout, stopping 13 shots, while the Blues' Derek Strang made 40 saves in the loss.
The teams meet again Saturday at 8:15 p.m., also at the Kings Arrow Arena.
FHS head coach Tim Smith said his team kept things simple on opening night, and though it may not have been pretty, they got the job done.
"It's what we talked about, it's the simple things that can cause breakdowns," Smith said. "We want to control the puck in the offensive zone. When we do that, our defencemen open up and then we can get the puck to the net."
That strategy worked, as Major scored both his goals on the night from the point.
After 17 minutes of back and forth, hard-hitting hockey to start the game, FHS drew first blood.
