Trailer Talk: 'GI Joe: Retaliation' Once Again Avoids Being American-ey

The first movie stank. This sequel? Well, we'll see. If you want a better, more satisfying "Joe", you should check out the 2009 animated "GI Joe: Resolute," which takes some cues from the comic series and from the world of anime, and delivers the kind of Joe I wish I had seen when I was a kid. People DIE in this Joe—and not just “red shirts” a la Star Trek, but main characters as well. Actions have **serious** consequences. I won’t give away major plot points, but the movie starts out with a bloody murder (only the results are seen) and subsequent shocking events that make perfect sense.

Sure, the “yeah, right” factor is still present, but at least Cobra Commander is shown to be a serious foe instead of foolish fop; Roadblock (with dreadlocks) and Gung Ho get to make a lot of things—and people—go “boom;” and Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes finally get to have a real fight-to-the-death showdown. Most shocking of all, Resolute depicts an entire city getting wiped out with 10 million people killed.
