The new artwork on Hunter Johnson's mask is a tribute to those who came before him.
The rookie goalie's helmet features the former logos of the Chatham Maroons and Micmacs, along with the Maroons' current logo.
On the back is a pink ribbon symbolizing the fight against breast cancer.
"The ribbon was in memory of the ones that we lost and those that we still have right now that beat cancer," said Johnson, 17, of Wyoming.
His great-grandmother Lillian Currah, who is in the stands every Sunday night, and grandmother Donelda MacRae are breast cancer survivors.
"I just wanted to keep them close because they're a big part of my life," Johnson said.
He didn't tell them about the design until it was done.
"It was even a surprise to me," said his mother, Roxanne Hendrick. "It was very touching, actually."
The other Maroons put pink-ribbon stickers on the backs of their helmets for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. They still wear the stickers.
